- Description
- The paper presents the results of an experimental program aimed at studying the influence of relative humidity cycling on the evolution of the tensile strength of a clayey rock from Northern Spain (Lilla claystone). Different numbers of long-term relative humidity cycles (up to four) were applied under unstressed conditions by vapor transfer technique to progressively induce physical degradation. Relative humidity varied from 50 to 99% during the hydraulic cycling. The influence of hydraulic cycling on tensile strength was indirectly evaluated by splitting tests (Brazilian tests) performed on undisturbed and progressively degraded samples. The derivation of a damage law for tensile strength evolution is presented in the paper considering irreversible volumetric strain accumulation, which could be included in constitutive models for soft rocks.
